The Junior Database Administrator – SQL Server plays a crucial role in providing Database Administration services for SQL Server Environments at Westinghouse. The main responsibilities for this position involve being a proactive database administrator with technical expertise in designing, building, tuning, installing, configuring, troubleshooting, and managing databases for SQL Server.

This role covers the following standard DBA tasks:

  • Reviews, tests, recommends, and installs upgrades of database software, including patches and major releases
  • Performs database backup and recovery as required, including periodic testing
  • Upgrades, configures, and maintains server and database monitoring software to optimize system performance and detect potential issues proactively. It includes resource monitoring and capacity planning.
  • Reviews, tests, updates, and documents detailed disaster recovery/business continuity plans for critical production servers
  • Modifies the database structure based on input from application developers
  • Creates documentation for all procedures and systems
  • Enrolls users, maintains system security, and controls user access to the database
  • The main duties are during business hours, with some evening and weekend work for projects, maintenance, and on-call support

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field
  • 1+ year of proven support in complex SQL Server database environments
  • Experience with both SQL Server standalone and clustered environments
  • Working knowledge of Windows Operating Systems
  • Proven experience in all areas of database administration using current technologies
  • Strong troubleshooting skills for critical database, networking, and system administration issues
  • Excellent critical thinking and decision-making abilities
  • Capacity to handle diverse situations and changing priorities effectively
  • Ability to prioritize workload, work under pressure, and meet deadlines
  • Proficiency in fully documenting technical designs and project/system-level documentation
  • Effective collaboration with clients, peers, and management to troubleshoot issues and develop solutions
  • Professional attitude with strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills in English
  • Works with minimal supervision and receives guidance from the Database Administrator Lead
  • Capable of working independently or in teams with technical judgment
  • Experience in additional DBA roles on non-Oracle platforms (SQL Server, etc.)
  • Familiarity with MongoDB or other NoSQL platforms
