Offer DescriptionThe Medical University of Lodz is the largest public medical university in Poland with 75 years of tradition in medical education. The International Doctoral School (IDS) of Medical University of Lodz supports its doctoral students by creating favourable substantive, financial and organisational conditions for their independent research projects implementation, knowledge, social skills and competence acquisition so that they could face the challenges of professional and public life in compliance with ethical code. The education of doctoral students is based on the education program and an individual research plan. The doctoral studies at the IDS are free of charge, they include 8 semesters and are completed with the submission of PhD dissertation. Educational program of IDS does not only facilitate the development of research competence but it also teaches student how to exploit and disseminate the scientific research findings. The innovative and flexible design of the program fosters doctoral students' independence and its module structure facilitates individual research plans implementation.
TheDepartment of Cell Culture and Genomic Analysisled by Prof. Agnieszka Piastowska-Ciesielska ). The main area of our interest is how xenobiotics might modulate the function of both cancer and normal cells. Currently, we are focused on the effect of mycotoxins- a toxic metabolites of fungi on hormone sensitive normal and cancer cells as well its interaction with other environmental factors. We are also involved in studies which aim is to assess the impact of peptide hormones - angiotensins (II-IV) and relaxin on the progression of hormone-dependent and hormone-independent cancers. We cooperates with Technical University of Lodz to design and use novel polymer-based radioisotope nanocarriers in cancer therapies.
We are currently seeking for two PhD student who would like to join our research team:
Position I:
Topic: The impact of mycotoxins on cellular processes, including oxidative stress, in cancer and normal cells in conditions reflecting civilization diseases such as diabetes or obesity.
Work plan to be done: The dissertation will evaluate two environmental factors: mycotoxin exposure and diabetes/obesity and their effect on oxidative stress and metabolism of both normal as well as prostate cancer. The detailed research scope will be planned and discussed with the applicant.
Position II:
Topic: Search of new molecular switches useful in prognosis and/or therapy of inflammatory bowel diseases and they characterization as symptomatic or asymptomatic diseases.
Work plan to be done: The dissertation will aim to search and characterization of new molecular switches useful in prognosis and/or therapy of inflammatory bowel diseases and they characterization as symptomatic or asymptomatic diseases. The work will consider age-related and gender-related changes. PhD student will use in vitro (cell lines/organoids) and in vivo (mouse models) models, as well as several techniques related to gastrointestinal tracts functional tests, molecular biology, or cell/tissue imaging to characterize the molecular target and the signaling pathway associated with its activation or blocking.

- MSc degree in biotechnology, biology or related discipline in medical sciences.
- Status of PhD student (IDS recruitment positive)
- Publications and conference presentations in the subject related to the project.

- Interest and knowledge in the discipline related to the topic.
