Job Description

The Core Services teams at Zendesk focus on building and maintaining secure, reliable, and user-friendly authentication, authorization, and security features for Zendesk's customers and services. We are seeking a Staff Software Engineer to join our new Permissions team, dedicated to creating advanced features that grant customers precise control over their Zendesk access across all products. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong problem-solving skills, a customer-centric mindset, and a passion for developing robust access controls for large-scale scenarios.

What you'll be doing
  • Deliver value directly to customers by developing and implementing secure, reliable, and advanced access controls.
  • Maintain exceptional reliability and quality for our systems while tackling the challenges of operating on a global scale. We manage some of the largest services within Zendesk.
  • Advocate for best practices, high-quality code, and thorough test coverage. We deploy code quickly and frequently, but never at the expense of stability and reliability.
  • Devise solutions that propel us towards a unified access management system for all Zendesk services.
What you bring to the role

Required:

  • Prior experience in backend or full-stack application engineering
  • Proven expertise in web application development and a strong command of at least one server-side scripting language
  • Excellent communication and time-management abilities
  • Committed to delivering results
  • You believe in collaborative software development and enjoy learning through paired programming, code reviews, and tech discussions.
  • Capable of taking ownership across all stages of software engineering: design, development, testing, deployment, and operational problem-solving
Preferred:
  • Previous experience overseeing Ruby or Scala services in a production environment
  • Background in working with extensive Identity & Access Management systems and/or familiarity with industry practices
  • Experience with monitoring and alerting tools to ensure system reliability
Tech Stack
  • Our backend consists of Ruby on Rails and Scala microservices
  • Frontend interfaces are developed using React and Ember
  • We utilize AWS Aurora for MySQL data storage and Kafka for inter-service event streaming
  • Deployment and scaling are handled through Kubernetes and AWS
