Project description:
We are inviting applications for a 2-year Postdoctoral position at the Dioscuri Centre for Modelling of Posttranslational Modifications at the Malopolska Centre of Biotechnology. The project will explore how glycans regulate protein dynamics, stability, and interactions via entropic mechanisms. Glycans are critical modulators of protein conformations, ligand binding, allostery, and membrane associations through steric and entropic effects. Although recognized as key factors influencing therapeutic efficacy and disease mechanisms, these glycan-driven phenomena remain poorly understood.

Through a combination of advanced computational modeling (replica exchange MD, metadynamics, REST-RECT simulations, and molecular docking) and experimental biophysical methods (DSC, NMR-based flexibility analyses), the successful candidate will investigate:
- How glycosylation modulates protein thermal stability and conformational dynamics.
- Entropic contributions of glycans to protein ligand binding and allosteric regulation.
- The impact of glycan-glycan and glycan-protein proximity on molecular interactions and membrane remodeling effects.

The candidate will collaborate closely with experimental teams, integrating computational predictions with experimental validations. This multidisciplinary project provides significant opportunities for professional growth in computational biology, biophysics, and glycobiology within an internationally collaborative environment.

The successful candidate will be a part of the Dioscuri Centre for Modelling of Posttranslational Modifications, which is an integral part of the Dioscuri Program, a Max Planck Society initiative, co-funded by the German and Polish Ministries of Science.

Skills/Qualifications

The selection procedure is open for all individuals, who meet the requirements set out in Articles 113 and 116.2.3) of the Act of 20 July 2018 – Law on Higher Education and Science, and who meet the following eligibility criteria according to § 165 of the Statute of the Jagiellonian University:

• holding at least a doctoral degree;
• having relevant scientific achievements;
• taking active part in scientific life.

Additional requirements and expectations:

1. A PhD degree in biophysics, physical chemistry, computational biology, chemistry, bioinformatics, or a closely related field.
2. Experience in molecular dynamics simulations, enhanced sampling methods, simulations of dynamic and flexible systems.
3. Familiarity with Unix/Linux environments and proven programming skills (Python, bash) are essential.
4. Knowledge of glycobiology, biophysical methods (especially DSC, NMR), and experience in analyzing large simulation datasets will be advantageous.
5. Excellent communication skills and fluency in English are required.

The course of selection procedure:

The first stage of the selection procedure is the formal assessment of the submitted documents. Applications which meet all formal requirements are the subject of substantive assessment, during which an interview with the Candidate may be conducted (directly or via electronic communication channels), upon settling the date of the interview with the Candidate. The Candidate has the right to appeal against the negative assessment by the selection board within 7 days from receiving the information about the results of the assessment.
