The Structural & Painting Inspector reports to the Site Manager and is responsible for inspecting and monitoring the construction and witnessing the testing of hull steel and outfitting items at the fabrication site, sub-contractors, and equipment manufacturers. Also, to ensure that the vessel is constructed to approved drawings, Classification rules, Flag state, and all regulatory bodies' rules and regulations. She/he will be responsible for ensuring that any deviation from approved design and procedures identified during construction and outfitting will be duly reported and modified accordingly. The Structural Inspector shall attend inspections as required, ensuring roles and responsibilities are understood and fulfilled. This inspector will also be expected to assist where requested in other discipline inspections when and where required by the Site Manager and the Project.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
- Ensuring the worksite for any inspection or test is in a safe condition in accordance with the ND HSE standards.
- Ensure that all activities are carried out in compliance with laws, regulations, contractual requirements, and the ND regulatory compliance plan. Health and safety of personnel, natural and working environment, and equipment shall be taken care of.
- Familiarization with the project regulatory compliance plan and standards.
- Ensuring any unsafe situations are reported to the Management.
- Ensuring the company's guidelines and requirements for scheduled and non-scheduled inspections are followed.
- Ensuring inspections and tests allocated by the Site Managers are attended and conducted in accordance with the approved drawings, specifications, and company guidelines.
- Attending audits of Sub-Contractors as required.
- Raising non-conformities as per company guidelines where any item on board in terms of design, installation, workmanship, construction, testing, or performance does not fulfill the approved drawings, specifications, or agreed meeting memoranda.
- Advising the Management of any areas where the design is lacking and could be improved or optimized with regards to performance, maintenance, future regulations, reliability, and redundancy.
- Obtaining the approval of drawings, test plans, and test procedures as required.
- Providing assistance and cover for other projects as required.
- Report progress of the fabrication to the Site Manager.
- Ensure that materials, equipment, and skills of personnel used for fabrication and installation are of quality as requested and fully certified according to recognized standards and regulatory requirements.
- Ensure that all documentation required has been submitted.
- Bring up potential areas of concern and show stoppers to management.
- Give input to Punch Lists of uncompleted work and non-conformities to approved design work.
- Document lessons learnt and design improvements.
- Degree in Naval Architecture or Engineering (a background within naval architecture, experience as shipyard QC inspector, Class or owner surveyor will be evaluated as adequate substitutes to lack of formal degree).
- Knowledge and experience with international shipbuilding standards and class societies requirements.
- Minimum 8 years of experience within Steel/Hull/Outfitting/Painting Inspections.
- Familiar with industry-approved welding and painting systems and procedures.
- Expertise in construction, understanding construction drawings, testing of hull structure, and outfitting items.
- Good verbal and written communication skills in English.
- The ability to cooperate in a multi-cultural environment.
- Good man management skills.
- Grasp essential details and can act on incomplete data.
- Able to work on own initiative.
