Data Tech Lead

We are seeking a Data Tech Lead to drive a high-impact, greenfield Azure Data Platform build for a leading UK-based sustainability and environmental operations organization. In this role, you will be the primary technical authority, shaping the overall build approach, modernizing DataOps practices, and designing CI/CD pipelines from scratch. You will lead a distributed, highly autonomous team of senior engineers to deliver an enterprise-grade, scalable, and reliable platform that underpins a nationwide sustainability operation. Working alongside architects, business stakeholders, and distributed engineering teams, you will turn complex requirements into robust technical execution, taking complete ownership of end-to-end delivery without the burden of legacy maintenance.

Responsibilities

• Technical Leadership & Strategy: Act as the primary technical lead for the engineering team, setting architectural standards, shaping technical approaches for epics/stories, and establishing DataOps best practices across the platform.
• Greenfield Architecture & Delivery: Design, build, and scale a brand-new Azure-native data platform using Microsoft Fabric, Azure Databricks, Azure Data Factory, or Azure Purview, ensuring long-term maintainability and reliability.
• Agile Backlog Alignment & Quality Oversight: Review user stories for clarity, feasibility, and architectural alignment; oversee code quality through rigorous reviews, clear acceptance criteria, and hands-on guidance.
• Pipeline & CI/CD Automation: Establish robust CI/CD pipelines, automated testing frameworks, and DataOps practices to unblock delivery and maintain high release standards.
• Team Guidance & Unblocking: Provide day-to-day technical direction to data engineers and specialists, mentoring team members, unblocking complex engineering challenges, and fostering an accountable, collaborative culture.
• Stakeholder & Architecture Collaboration: Partner closely with enterprise architects, product owners, and UK-based business stakeholders to translate complex business intent into sound, implementable technical solutions.ove

Requirements

• Data Engineering Expertise: 5+ years of hands-on data engineering experience with a proven track record of designing and delivering large-scale data platforms.
• Core Tech Stack Proficiency: Deep expertise in implementing enterprise data platforms on Microsoft Azure, with hands-on experience in Microsoft Fabric, Azure Databricks, or Azure Data Factory.
• Data Modeling & Architecture: Strong command of modern data modeling techniques, enterprise data integration, and DataOps practices.
• Agile Leadership & Autonomy: Proven experience working in Agile/Scrum environments using Jira and Confluence, with the ability to operate with high autonomy and lead teams of senior professionals.
• Communication & Stakeholder Management: Excellent written and spoken English, with the ability to whiteboard technical solutions with engineers and articulate architectural rationale to senior stakeholders.

Nice to have

• Greenfield Platform Build: Prior experience constructing an enterprise-scale data platform from scratch (0-to-1 build).
• Extended Azure Ecosystem: Exposure to modern governance, cataloging, and orchestration tools such as Azure Purview, Synapse Analytics, or Delta Lake architectures.
• Domain Experience: Background in sustainability, environmental operations, supply chain, or managing multi-vendor corporate data flows.
