Job Profile Summary:

The Mechanical Design Delivery Principal is responsible for design decisions related to a portfolio of data center projects which can include: new construction, phased expansion, retrofits and upgrades, acquisition conversions, mechanical and electrical equipment selections, and standards upgrades in either a specific region or globally. They are an exceptional industry professional progressing towards becoming a recognized expert on data center design. They will also mentor engineers within the regional engineering, design, construction and site operations job families. They will perform quality control and technical reviews for medium to large capital expansion scale projects and facilitate the rollout of engineering initiatives. This role will also be responsible for the development and publication of global design standards. The Design Delivery Principal should effectively interact with other internal and external teams, including the design engineering, site engineering, construction management and regional operations teams as well as support vendors and consultants on projects, policies, and procedures. They will provide training and onboarding for new design managers and consultant teams.

Responsibilities:

  1. Reviews capital expansion project designs at key stage gates for technical correctness, efficiency, and adherence to standards.

  2. Provides guidance, technical expertise, and project leadership in ensuring projects or other design and engineering initiatives are meeting or exceeding company expectations and standards to deliver a portfolio of world-class data centers with a strong focus on technical excellence, mission-critical resilience, and cost management.

  3. Reviews and contributes to the development of globally standardized tools, techniques, and processes for the management and reporting of the design process.

  4. Works with peers in other regions to drive consistency and technical excellence in design and delivery practices and methodologies.

  5. Thinks and acts in a global manner, considering the applicability of any design decision, innovations or standards changes for all regions.

  6. Maintains interpersonal relationships with internal technical staff, external design consulting partners, construction management, commercial management, and regional P&L holders to ensure appropriate stakeholder exposure and buy-in to data center projects.

  7. Appropriately leverages the center of excellence teams and more senior Design staff to augment their individual technical expertise to ensure all facets of the data center design are adequately considered and approved.

  8. Manages internal and external resources via their influence and outstanding competencies.

  9. Works hand-in-hand with the regional design teams and Construction Managers to deliver Concept Designs and Standards that support the delivery of world-class data centers.

  10. Expert operating knowledge of engineering systems to include advanced analysis, CFD modeling, and energy modeling.

  11. Ability to apply knowledge of Equinix processes and procedures and industry standards to resolve non-routine issues.

  12. Works with vendors to identify and resolve hardware and software issues with vendors' products which affect Equinix designs.

  13. Evaluates and assures safety in design and promotes safe working practices in operation.

  14. Consistently solves complex, cross-functional issues requiring independent action and a high degree of initiative to resolve.

  15. Makes recommendations for system level enhancements to eliminate potential problems.

  16. Has experience in construction stage commissioning and resolving issues identified during commissioning which affect multiple systems and equipment.

  17. Stays up-to-date on advancements in design being investigated by the centers of excellence teams to ensure technologies support future data center design and construction needs and feeds back information to construction for incorporation of changes.

  18. Ensures designs meet Equinix's Global Design Standards and the business needs for capacity, density, and function.

  19. Contributes to identifying and developing training programs.

  20. Provides cross-functional training.

  21. Aquires knowledge by expanding experience with systems, vendor training, participation in industry groups or meetings, and shadowing others.

  22. Is SME with many systems and trains others inside and outside of the group.

Qualifications:

  1. Proven years of experience in a Design MEP Firm or in the design team of a Mission Critical Building operator or subcontractor with a focus on preferred.

  2. BSc in Mechanical Engineering.

  3. PE desirable but not essential.

  4. Experience with design and troubleshooting of Fuel Oil and Natural Gas Storage and Delivery systems.

  5. Experience with design and troubleshooting of Fire Protection and Alarm systems.

  6. Experience in mission critical system testing and commissioning.
