Job Description
Designs, develops, maintains, tests, and optimizes operating system to implement hardware abstraction layers, OS services, and user space software subsystems. The subsystems development requires technologies including virtualization, containerization, graphics/media user space components, networking routing, connectivity stacks (Bluetooth, WiFi, GPS, etc.), power management, performance optimization, and/or other technologies both open source and proprietary. Utilizes knowledge in software architecture, design, and development, and understands operating system internals and silicon on platform features.

Intel Security Architecture and Engineering (SAE) is chartered with developing a comprehensive understanding of current and future security threats, guiding research, and developing solutions and mitigations. SAE develops security architecture and implementation across Intel products.

Working Model
This role will be eligible for our hybrid work model which allows employees to split their time between working on-site at their assigned Intel site and off-site.
In certain circumstances the work model may change to accommodate business needs.
The Systems Memory and Storage Architecture team is actively researching heterogeneous systems architectures aimed at delivering performance and power advancements not currently achievable with today's CPUs and GPUs. The team is primarily focused on prototyping software and hardware that integrates compute closely with memory to accelerate the processing of Large Language Models and other critical applications. We are seeking software engineers with AI software experience to join the team and assist us in prototyping the necessary software capabilities as we strive to define the architecture for future distributed computing systems. In this role, you will be involved in software definition and development at the intersection of software and hardware, linking the AI stack to prototype hardware. Apart from aiding in delivering prototype systems, you will also be instrumental in specifying potential future products based on your observations. This position presents opportunities to contribute to open source software development at Intel and potentially within the broader software community. It also provides a significant opportunity for learning about AI in general and about platform memory support for AI specifically. You will collaborate directly with Principal Engineers and Fellows.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelors or Masters Degree in EE, CE, CS plus 3+ years of experience or PhD in EE, CE, CS.
- Proficiency in Linux kernel development and device driver programming.
- Deep comprehension of hardware architecture and system-level programming.
- Working knowledge of computer systems HW/SW interface.
- Proficiency in C/C++, solid understanding of Linux kernel internals, and experience with low-level programming.
- Experience working within a larger software team.
Additional Valued Qualifications:
- Demonstrated contribution to Linux Kernel or other open-source software development.
- Proven expertise in debugging, profiling, and optimizing kernel code.
- Knowledge of AI or HPC platform, CXL, network, and system architecture is advantageous.
- Experience in systems research, particularly in research prototype creation, is a plus.
