ENSEMBLE3 is a new Centre of Excellence for nanophotonics, advanced materials, and novel crystal growth-based technologies located in Warsaw, Poland, created jointly by the Łukasiewicz Institute of Microelectronics and Photonics, the University of Warsaw (Poland), the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (Germany), the Sapienza University of Rome (Italy), and the Nanoscience Research Center nanoGUNE (Spain). The ENSEMBLE3 Centre will work on the development of novel material technologies and advanced materials with unique electromagnetic properties, with potential applications in fields such as photonics, optoelectronics, telecommunication, solar energy conversion, medicine, and aerospace.

Job Description:

Project Focus: Key Preparation Technology for Hard Carbon-Based Composite Anode and Its Application in Sodium-Ion Batteries

This position is dedicated to overcoming the challenges of limited capacity and high temperatures in conventional hard carbon material preparation through innovative materials design and theoretical calculations. The project aims to achieve the following goals:

• Develop a low-temperature macro-preparation technology for hard carbon.
• Optimize the design of hard carbon materials.
• Create a new flame-retardant electrolyte for sodium-ion (Na-ion) batteries.
• The ultimate objective is to produce a high-performance hard carbon-based sodium-ion battery system, contributing to sustainable large-scale energy storage solutions.

The position is supervised by Dr. Oleksandr I. Malyi at Ensemble3 in Poland. Throughout this project, the applicant will:

• Develop a fundamental understanding of the charge/discharge profile of hard carbon through theoretical calculations.
• Modify hard carbon through theoretical approaches to doping and alloying.
• Theoretically develop fundamental understanding of new flame-retardant electrolyte for sodium-ion (Na-ion) batteries

Profile of Candidates/Requirements:

• A Ph.D. or equivalent in a related field.
• Proficiency in Python programming.
• Deep knowledge of electronic structure theory and a strong foundational understanding of solid-state physics.
• Experience with Density Functional Theory (DFT) and a high interest in an academic career.
• Strong analytical skills and problem-solving ability.
• Excellent communication skills in English.
• Age under 35 years.
• Preference given to fresh Ph.D. graduates.

• Your personal data will be kept for a period of 3 months. After this period, due to the requirements of the project co-financed by the entities listed in point 8, your personal data will be processed (only in the form of archiving) for a period of 10 years. If you consent to the processing of data for further recruitment purposes, the data will be processed for a period of 1 year. After this period, your applications are deleted and the candidates' personal data are not processed for any other purpose. We do not send the application back. We only contact selected people.
