Job Description

Within the Data & Analytics team we help Tesco, our customers and the communities where we operate to get the most value from data. We build and run Tesco's data platforms, we architect and engineer data onto these platforms, provide capabilities and tools to the analytics community across Tesco, and develop data products at scale.

As Software Development Manager in Data Science Engineering, within Data & Analytics, you'll lead software development in one of Tesco's most strategic technology areas. You'll work with our software engineers, data scientists, product managers, systems engineers, and analytics professionals to build robust software products that deliver valuable outcomes for our customers. You will be responsible for the software throughout the lifecycle; we maintain a DevOps culture, employing continuous integration and delivery, supporting our code through to production and beyond.

You will be responsible for:

As a Software Development Manager, your primary responsibility is to build and maintain a passionate, engaged, and effective development team of engineers. You'll do this by taking a deep interest in the people that report to you, making sure they are happy, motivated, and challenged in what they are doing, guiding them to reach pragmatic technical solutions, and keep yourself close to the code (without becoming a blocker). You'll also take ownership when things go wrong but celebrate success collectively and, in short, act as a multiplier of your team's effectiveness. Specifically, you will:

  • Foster the careers of the engineers reporting into you by finding opportunities for growth, coaching, addressing concerns and implementing performance management.
  • Continuously improve our engineering practices across data science products to operate at pace and at scale, using and promoting MLOps practices to deliver quality production software.
  • Work closely with Product Management to identify and minimise risk within an outcome and help prioritise and evolve a workable technical solution ready for delivery.
  • Contribute to group discussions on system design and architecture.
  • Contribute to our platform strategy.
  • Build globally, ensuring consistency in approach across all our locations.
  • Inspire the engineering teams to produce quality solutions.
  • Grow the capability of Tesco Technology as a whole by becoming involved in our engineering hiring and being passionate about building successful and diverse teams.
  • Contribute to building a team culture for continuous improvement and an environment where engineers want to work.
  • Continually look for how we can evolve and improve our technology, processes and practices.
  • Keep your technical skills up to date and monitoring new technologies, processes, understanding how they might benefit the Technology team and wider Tesco.
