Offer Description

A person employed as an adjunct (post-doc) for a defined period up to 33 months at the Department of Nuclear Reactions and Hadronic Processes - NZ24 at IFJ PAN will be obliged to participate in work on research topics and projects implemented and planned for the nearest period at the NZ24 Department.

The basic tasks of the employed person will include:

  1. Preparation of the conceptual design of a Cosmic-Veto detector for the experiment searching for neutron-antineutron oscillations at European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund.
  2. Implementation of this detector to the model for Monte-Carlo simulation, currently under development.
  3. Participation in the design, construction and performance tests of the detector prototype.
  4. Participation in the construction of the final detector and its integration with other components of the detection system.
  5. Analysis of the data obtained on each stage of the work.

The employed person will also be obliged to disseminate the results of research in the form of publications in leading scientific journals indexed in the JCR and speeches during seminars and conferences, including international ones. This person will also be obliged to apply for external funding for research.

Skills/Qualifications:

  • Doctoral degree in physical sciences or related disciplines: technical physics, informatics.
  • Qualifications necessary to carry out research tasks at NZ24.
  • Knowledge of the research topics in the field of nuclear and particle physics.
  • Experience in experimental physics including commonly used particle detection techniques.
  • Good knowledge of methods and programs commonly used in experimental physics (ROOT, MATLAB, etc.), ability to create own programming tools and their integration with existing software written in C++ in a Linux environment.
  • Ability to work in a team, communication skills.
  • Very good knowledge of spoken and written English.

Welcome:

  • Knowledge of at least one of Monte-Carlo simulation packages (GEANT4, FLUKA, etc.).

Full-time position, no teaching obligations - only research, annual leave 36 days, well-equipped facilities, the tools required for research: computer farms and cloud computing infrastructure, software, servers, etc. Work in an active and inspiring environment; an active seminar program, the possibility for close collaborations with other research institutes, access to world-class experts, parking.

Selection process

All applications will be reviewed by the Selection Committee. The Selection Committee selects the candidates to be invited to interviews based on submitted documents.

  • Interviews with candidates shall take place from June 9th, to June 11th, 2025. Candidates qualified for interviews shall be notified by e-mail about the exact date of the Interview by May 26th, 2025. During the interview, the candidate shall be required to give a presentation, stored on a pen drive, lasting 10 minutes at maximum which shall present the candidate's most important achievement.
  • The competition shall be concluded by June 27th, 2025.
  • Each candidate shall be notified by e-mail about the results of the competition.
  • The final decision on employing and salary shall be taken by IFJ PAN Director.
Additional comments

A person employed at the position of Assistant Professor with a PhD degree will receive a monthly basic salary of PLN 7,000 gross, and with a postdoctoral degree of PLN 7,800 gross. The total amount of remuneration is influenced by additional components, such as: length of service and allowance for working under conditions of exposure to ionizing radiation (if applicable).

Type of contract: contract of employment, full-time at IFJ PAN as the only place of work.
