Postdoctoral Research Associate position in Experimental Heavy-Ion Physics

The Heavy-Ion Reaction Group (HIRG) at the Faculty of Physics at Warsaw University of Technology participates in the experiments STAR at BNL, CBM at FAIR, HADES at GSI, ALICE, and NA61/SHINE at CERN.

The STAR and CBM groups specialize in measurements of two-particle femtoscopic correlation analysis. We closely cooperate with the HADES and ALICE groups at WUT.

The successful candidate will work with Professor Hanna Zbroszczyk on the STAR experiment at RHIC and the CBM experiment at SIS, focusing on studies of two-particle correlations. Responsibilities include data analysis and publication of results, collaboration service work, mentoring students, and supporting the Heavy Ion Reaction Group's research activities. Occasional travel to BNL and GSI will be required. The successful candidate is expected to play a leading role in studies of femtoscopic correlations at the STAR and CBM experiments search. The contract can be extended up to 24 months, provided a satisfactory evaluation outcome after the first 12 months.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Taking part in the analysis of heavy-ion collision data at RHIC recorded by the STAR detector in order to study two-particle correlations;
  • Taking part in the Monte Carlo data analysis for the CBM experiment
  • Joining the STAR and CBM collaborations and the relevant Physics Working Group, participating in weekly deliberations and active participation in its meetings (at least every few weeks);
  • Taking part in data-taking (experimental shifts);
  • Working closely with the HADES Correlations (femtoscopy) group;
  • Presentation of results at meetings and conferences, as well as writing scientific articles and publishing papers in peer-reviewed journals;
  • Maintaining close cooperation with colleagues in the PWG group will be essential for the progress of all stages of the project

Candidate requirements (and skills):

  • Ph.D. in Physical Sciences;
  • Experience in experiments in the field of nuclear physics and elementary particles of high or intermediate energy;
  • Knowledge of experimental techniques and measurements in the field of nuclear/high-energy physics;
  • Experience in the field of physics of "soft" processes;
  • Knowledge of experimental measurements with the use of particle correlation techniques;
  • Knowledge of MC generators and detector simulations.

  • The position is currently for a year and may be renewed for another year, depending on performance.
  • Employment status

It is a full-time, 100% research position with no teaching obligations. However, the successful candidate will have an opportunity to supervise B.Sc . and M.Sc (and partially Ph.D.) students and teach selected classes.

Salary: according to the max. rate allowed in the National Science Centre competition.
